Sri Caitanya and his four principal associates, known collectively as the Panca-tattva, are the subject of a robust body of sacred narratives and philosophical texts dating from the sixteenth century into the present. Central to this literary contribution is Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, which was instrumental in establishing an orthodox doctrine of Gaudiya Vedanta. Exactly who Sri Caitanya is and what he taught is elucidated in the pages of the text.

The present book, Sacred Preface, is an extended commentary on the auspicious invocation—mangalacarana—of Krsnadasa Kaviraja’s Sri Caitanya-caritamrta. Krsnadasa inserted his own commentary on this fourteen-verse invocation into the body of his hagiography, and this elaboration on the significance of his invocation no doubt served the Gaudiya community well. Much of the book’s philosophy and theology is packed into this commentary, and it thus sets a philosophical stage on which the drama of the life and lila of Sri Caitanya is played out.

Sacred Preface, written over five hundred years after Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, is a testament to the vitality of Krsnadasa’s text, as it explores the implications of Krsnadasa’s invocatory verses and auto-commentary from the perspective of a modern practitioner.

Sacred Preface eBook Swami B V Tripurari

The first chapter is an interesting discussion about consciousness from a spiritual, Bhakti perspective, but doesn't gloss over views from neuroscientists and philosophers of mind. It's also the most difficult chapter to get through, but well worth the time. Subsequent chapters are easier to assimilate and are just as interesting.

The book is about the Preface of Chaitanya Charitamrita, the formidable work of mature scholarship by Krishna Das Kaviraja, a fifteenth-century saint/author, about Shri Chaitanya. About Shri Chaitanya, Christian theologian John Moffitt writes in Journey to Gorakhpur: An Encounter with Christ Beyond Christianity (which Swami Tripurari quotes in the book) "Of all the saints in recorded history, East or West, he [Sri Chaitanya] seems to me the supreme example of a soul carried away on a tide of ecstatic love of God. . . . His life in the holy town of Puri is the story of a man in a state of almost continuous spiritual intoxication. Illuminating discourses, deep contemplation, moods of loving communion with God, were daily occurrences."

I've read several of Swami's books and found this one his best so far. This is quite a fascinating look at Bhakti from within the tradition itself.

Sacred Preface eBook Swami B V Tripurari Reviews

This is a wonderful book that will absolutely enhance anyone's understanding of and appreciation for Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and the Panca-tattva. Swami's realization of the subject matter, as well as his feeling for it, come across very clearly. He effectively engages with modern scientific currents of thought in relation to the self and consciousness, all via the light shown by the Gaudiya Vaisnava siddhanta. Essential reading for all aspiring Gaudiya Vaisnavas and anyone else seeking to better understand the self, our source, and the connection between the two.
I love his writing, it is almost musical. This book describes many simple and complex things from an interesting and lofty perspective. Not sure anything will ever make me 'get it' but this is a nice read when I can get into the mood.
